The government has confirmed that the proposal to implement a five-day work week for banks is currently under consideration. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha on 28 July 2025, the Ministry of Finance stated that the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) has submitted a request to declare all Saturdays as banking holidays.

Currently, public sector banks remain closed only on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month, as per a government notification issued in August 2015 under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. The proposed change would make all Saturdays official bank holidays across India.

The proposal, supported by the All India Bank Officers’ Confederation (AIBOC), argues that a five-day work week would enhance productivity, efficiency, and create a more ethical and balanced workplace environment.

Responding to questions raised by MP K.C. Venugopal, the government addressed concerns related to staff shortages and the feasibility of implementing the new work schedule. The Finance Ministry clarified that public sector banks are autonomous in determining staffing requirements, which depend on factors like business needs, retirements, and unexpected exits.

According to data shared by the ministry, 96% of staff positions in public sector banks were filled as of March 31, 2025. The small gap, it said, is due to routine attrition.

While the government has not announced a timeline for the rollout of the proposed five-day banking week, it reiterated that the matter is under active review.
