‘Encounter Specialist’ Daya Nayak Promoted To ACP A Day Before His Retirement
Mumbai, July 30, 2025: Daya Nayak, the Mumbai Police officer widely recognized for his role as an ‘encounter specialist’ in the 1990s, has been promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), according to an official announcement on Tuesday.
Along with Nayak, senior inspectors Jivan Kharat, Deepak Dalvi, and Pandurang Pawar have also been elevated to the ACP rank by the Maharashtra home department.
Nayak, who joined the Mumbai Police force in 1995 and is currently posted at the Bandra crime branch unit, earned national recognition for leading several encounters against gangsters during a time of heightened underworld activity. His life even inspired a Bollywood film.
In 2006, Nayak was booked by the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) in a disproportionate assets case, but was later exonerated of all charges.
Over the years, he has also served with the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and was involved in high-profile investigations, including the 2021 Ambani residence security scare and the murder case of Thane businessman Mansukh Hiren.
