Pune, July 31, 2025: Pune Metro authorities are accelerating construction on the extended segment of Phase One, which stretches 4.413 km from PCMC station to Bhakti Shakti in Nigdi. The project aims to be completed six months ahead of schedule.

Although Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone in March last year, actual construction began five months later in August. The planned duration for completing the stretch is 36 months, but Pune Metro officials are targeting a 30-month timeline.

Work is progressing rapidly, with civil construction in full swing. Administrative procedures for installing overhead cables, escalators, and lifts have already begun to avoid delays later in the project cycle.

The elevated extension will include three stations: Chinchwad, Akurdi, and Nigdi. The project is estimated to cost Rs 1,048.22 crore, which includes provisions for intermodal integration, station development, pedestrian bridges, tracks, environmental impact assessments, design, depots, and parking facilities.

The currently operational 17.4 km metro route from Swargate to PCMC has received strong public support. The Phase One extension goes beyond PCMC to Nigdi in the north and is also planned to stretch underground from Swargate to Katraj in the south. However, the 5.5 km Swargate-Katraj underground stretch, estimated at Rs 2,954.53 crore, is yet to commence. It is expected to be completed by February 2029.

Additionally, the 15.7 km Vanaz-Ramwadi route is fully functional. The Central Government recently approved its extensions to Chandani Chowk and Wagholi, adding 12.75 km and 13 new stations. This expansion, aimed at connecting rapidly developing areas like Bavdhan, Kothrud, Kharadi, and Wagholi, is expected to be completed in four years at a cost of Rs 3,636.24 crore.

Separately, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) is developing Metro Line-3, a 23 km corridor from Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar District Court. It is scheduled to become operational by March 2026.
