Pune | August 2, 2025: As part of the ongoing equal water supply scheme in Pune, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has intensified efforts to install water meters at every household. However, facing resistance from some residents, the civic body has now taken a firm stand.

PMC has announced that around 77,000 water meters will be installed within a month. If anyone obstructs the meter installation process, they could face legal action under Section 353 of the Indian Penal Code for interfering with government work. The civic administration has appealed to citizens to cooperate fully with the installation process.

This decision follows a recent review meeting chaired by Maharashtra’s Water Resources Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, who directed the PMC to take urgent measures to reduce water leakage. In line with this directive, PMC has set a one-month target to complete the installation of pending meters under the Equal Water Supply Scheme.

Under this scheme, PMC is constructing 83 water tanks and laying over 1,000 kilometers of new pipelines across the city. Work on more than 65 tanks is already complete, though some pipeline works are still in progress due to challenges on the ground.

The meters are being installed on both residential and commercial properties to ensure regulated supply, minimize wastage, and distribute available water more efficiently citywide.

Originally, PMC planned to install 3.25 lakh meters based on Property Tax Department records, but the number was later revised to 2.90 lakh. After conducting a fresh consumer survey, the number has now been finalized at 2.63 lakh, with a 5% buffer.

So far, 1.85 lakh meters have been installed. The remaining 77,000 will be installed by five contractors appointed by the main implementation agency. Each contractor has been tasked with installing 15,000 meters within a month, informed Nandkishore Jagtap, Head of the Water Supply Department.
