Cardiologist emphasizes that ECG is not enough, suggests TMT and Echo for comprehensive heart check-up

A leading cardiologist has warned that relying solely on an ECG (electrocardiogram) may give an incomplete picture of heart health. “ECG only gives 20 to 30 percent information about the condition of your heart,” he stated, urging people to undergo two additional non-invasive tests, TMT (Treadmill Test) and Echocardiography for a fuller understanding.

Explaining the importance of these tests in simple terms, the doctor said a TMT involves walking or running on a treadmill, during which ECG readings are monitored in real-time as the intensity of the exercise gradually increases. This helps assess how well the heart muscles receive oxygen under physical stress. If chest pain occurs or ECG changes are noted during the test, it may signal heart disease. TMT is also used to determine post-heart attack fitness levels, evaluate chest pain, and monitor heart rhythm and blood pressure under stress.

The second key test is Echocardiography, or Echo, an ultrasound scan of the heart that provides live internal visuals. It measures the ejection fraction (pumping capacity of the heart), checks heart valve functioning, chamber size, and detects any abnormal connections between chambers.

Together, ECG, TMT, and Echo can offer a real-time view of heart health and cover up to 80 percent of what needs to be assessed non-invasively. The cardiologist stressed that even if your ECG appears normal, it does not necessarily mean your heart is healthy and that these additional tests are crucial, especially for individuals experiencing symptoms like chest discomfort, breathlessness, or fatigue.
