Pune, August 11, 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has started the construction of the city’s first air-conditioned (AC) public toilet at Baner, with an investment of around ₹87 lakh. This facility will be the most expensive public toilet in Maharashtra. The project is part of a broader plan to build five state-of-the-art AC public toilets near key city entry points.

Other proposed locations include Baner’s octroi post area, near Swargate ST bus stand, Shewalewadi, Katraj, and Wagholi. The total cost for all five facilities is estimated at ₹4.31 crore, with proposals for the remaining four already submitted to the standing committee. Maintenance and repairs will be carried out by private contractors, while usage fees will be determined by PMC’s General Body.

The ‘Pune Smart City Development Corporation’ (PSCDCL) and PMC are jointly implementing the project. However, the Citizens’ Forum in Pune has raised objections to such high spending on toilets.
