The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will announce its draft ward delimitation today, a key step that is set to shape political prospects ahead of the long-pending municipal elections.
Ward delimitation defines the geographical boundaries of each ward, including which slums, housing societies, and localities fall within it. Political workers and aspirants closely monitor the process as their electoral success often depends on whether their core voter base remains within their ward.
As per the government’s schedule, the draft ward delimitation will be announced on Friday, August 22, by the election office. The PMC IT department will then upload the draft maps on its website.
The stakes are high this year, with civic polls pending for three years and several new aspirants planning to contest. Republican Party of India leader Siddharth Dhende said, “The ward structure is crucial as it directly impacts a candidate’s vote bank.”
Ward structures are sometimes drawn to favour particular candidates. Years of work in a locality can be undone if boundaries are altered.
The opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has repeatedly accused BJP of attempting to manipulate the delimitation process. Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Prashant Jagtap warned, “If the draft ward structures violate election commission guidelines, we will file objections.”
