Mandi (Himachal Pradesh): A video of a nurse from Himachal Pradesh risking her life to vaccinate a newborn has gone viral on social media.

The nurse, Kamla Devi, 40, was seen jumping across boulders to cross a swollen river in Mandi district. Holding her shoes in one hand and a bag on her shoulders, she carefully made her way through the strong current.

Kamla Devi said she was determined to reach the infant because the baby’s mother could not travel due to bad weather. “I was worried about the baby. The vaccination was important, so I decided to go myself,” she explained.

Devi is posted at a Primary Health Centre in Sudhar, Padhar tehsil, and also has additional charge of the Swar Health Sub-Centre. This made the child’s immunisation her responsibility.

Speaking about the incident, she said, “I only had the baby’s health on my mind. I don’t know who recorded the video, but after it went viral, people have been calling me and congratulating me.”

Chief Medical Officer Dr. Deepali Sharma praised her dedication but also advised health workers not to take unnecessary risks. “It was a brave effort, but safety is important. If there are accessibility issues, arrangements will be made to help staff reach beneficiaries,” she said.

The video has received widespread praise online. Many users lauded her courage, calling her “an inspiration” and “a true example of duty.” Others, however, urged authorities to provide better infrastructure so health workers do not have to risk their lives in such conditions.
