The Birla Ganpati Temple, also known as Aditya Birla Ganesh Temple or Shri Mangal Murti Morya, is one of the most famous landmarks near Pune. Location and Background
The temple is located at Shirgaon near Talegaon, about 31 km from Pune, overlooking the Mumbai-Pune Highway at Somtane Phata. It was built by the Birla family and inaugurated on 17 January 2009 after two years of construction.
The huge idol of Lord Ganesha was crafted by Maturam Verma and Nareshkumar Verma from Pilani. The idol stands about 54 feet tall on an 18-foot pedestal that is 45 feet wide. The measurements were carefully designed to total the number 9, which is considered auspicious in Hindu belief. The idol faces east, symbolizing new beginnings.
The Idol and Temple Architecture
The Birla Ganpati idol is one of the tallest and largest idols of Lord Ganesha in India and Asia. To reach the idol, visitors have to climb around 180 steps. From the top, the temple offers a stunning view of the surrounding hills and greenery, especially during the monsoon when the landscape is filled with fresh flowers and lush trees.
The temple is built in a modern style with stone and lime mortar. The outer walls have carvings inspired by traditional Indian temples. Inside, the decorations include woodwork and paintings that showcase scenes from Hindu mythology.
The idol of Lord Ganesha is made of wood and painted grey. Lord Ganesha here has four arms holding a lotus, an axe, a modak (sweet), and a conch shell. He wears a crown and a garland of flowers, making the idol both powerful and beautiful.
