New Study Reveals This Drug Can Boost Hair Density by 20% in Men With Hair Loss: Here’s Everything You Need To Know

Hair loss affects millions across the world, and India is no exception. A recent Phase 2a clinical study, says more than 80% of men and 40% of women experience it in their lifetime, yet treatments remain limited. However, the study has also given new hope. The trial tested a topical drug called PP405 on people with pattern hair loss, and results show it could actually regrow hair by reactivating dormant follicles.

What is PP405?

PP405 is an innovative, non-invasive topical small molecule designed to reactivate dormant hair follicle stem cells and stimulate new hair growth. The intellectual property for PP405 and related compounds was licensed from (University of California, Los Angeles) UCLA in 2018, underscoring the therapy’s strong scientific foundation rooted in advanced stem cell research. This positions PP405 as a promising candidate in regenerative medicine for treating hair loss.

Inside the trial

The study enrolled 78 men and women with androgenetic alopecia. Participants were randomly given either PP405 or a placebo, applied once daily for four weeks, and then observed for 12 weeks. The findings were significant: within just one month of use, early signs of new hair growth were seen. By the eighth week, 31% of men with advanced hair loss who used PP405 experienced more than a 20% increase in hair density. In comparison, none of the participants in the placebo group showed this level of improvement.

Faster results than current options

What makes the results stand out is the speed. Most existing treatments, such as oral tablets or topical solutions, take six months to a year to show visible regrowth. In this study, participants showed changes in as little as four weeks.

Another key point: PP405 didn’t just help thicken existing hair but seemed to stimulate growth in areas where no hair was visible earlier. This suggests that the drug could trigger the reactivation of dormant stem cells in the scalp, something current treatments don’t directly address.

Safety and ease of use

The study also looked at safety, which is often a concern with hair loss treatments. PP405 was applied topically and showed no traces of the drug in the bloodstream, reducing the risk of side effects. Participants tolerated the treatment well, adding to its potential as a practical solution.

Why the study matters

The importance of this study goes beyond cosmetic appeal. Hair loss, especially among young men in 

India, often leads to anxiety, low confidence, and social pressure. A drug that can safely bring back visible hair growth in weeks could change how people manage baldness.

The trial results also come at a time when the global hair loss market, valued at $23.6 billion in 2021, continues to expand. The demand for effective treatments is growing, and PP405’s study findings add a new option to the discussion.

What comes next?

The study was conducted by Pelage Pharmaceuticals, a company working on regenerative medicine. While these are still early-stage results, larger studies are expected, including a Phase 3 trial planned for 2026, to further evaluate how effective and safe PP405 is for broader use.
