Pune, September 19, 2025: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to restart its long-defunct multi-storey mechanical parking facility near Chhatrapati Sambhaji Udyan on Jangli Maharaj (JM) Road. The structure, lying idle since 2017, will now be upgraded to accommodate SUVs and electric vehicles with charging stations, as part of PMC’s push to implement a paid parking system.

The revival will be executed in partnership with Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) under an 80-20 revenue-sharing arrangement. According to PMC officials, a Delhi-based contractor who originally built the facility in 2007 has inspected it and will soon submit a proposal for repairs.

The 20-storey vertical parking facility was constructed at a cost of ₹2.4 crore to house 80 cars but failed to attract commuters, primarily due to the availability of easy roadside parking. It was shut down in 2012 when no private operators came forward to manage it.

PMC had introduced a “pay and park” policy seven years ago but did not enforce it. In 2024, a proposal for a pilot project across six key city roads was sent to the state urban development department and is still awaiting approval. The civic body now plans to roll out parking facilities on JM Road, Fergusson College Road, Laxmi Road, Balewadi High Street, and arterial roads in Vimannagar and Bibwewadi.

The facility will run jointly with Maha-Metro, ensuring a more structured approach to parking management in the city.
