Pune News: Railways Unveil 1,000-Day Mega Plan; Hi-Tech Mega Terminal To Come Up At Alandi
Pune, June 18, 2026: In a major boost for rail passengers in Pune and surrounding areas, the Central Government has unveiled an ambitious 1,000-day railway development plan aimed at transforming the city’s rail infrastructure and significantly increasing its capacity.
Announcing the initiative, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the comprehensive plan is designed to double Pune’s railway handling capacity, improve passenger services, and strengthen connectivity across Maharashtra. The railway projects form part of a larger investment package worth ₹2 lakh crore being implemented across the state.
Pune Railway Station Capacity to Double
To address growing congestion at Pune Railway Station, railway authorities have launched an extensive yard remodelling project. As part of the plan, the number of platforms at Pune station will be increased from six to twelve, effectively doubling its operational capacity.
The expansion is expected to allow a substantial increase in the number of trains arriving at and departing from Pune. To free up space at the main station, railway maintenance operations will be shifted to Ghorpadi, Fursungi, and Alandi. A dedicated coach maintenance facility is also being developed at Ghorpadi.
Hi-Tech Mega Terminal Planned at Alandi
In one of the most significant components of the project, a new mega railway terminal will be developed at Alandi. Earlier, railway authorities had considered Uruli as a potential location for the terminal, but the proposal was revised due to high land acquisition costs. Since the Railways already own land at Alandi, the project will now be executed there.
The proposed terminal will feature nine platforms, seven pit lines for maintenance work, and 17 stabling lines for parking trains. Officials estimate that the facility will be capable of handling operations of up to 35 train sets daily, helping reduce pressure on Pune Railway Station.
Modernisation of Suburban Railway Stations
Several suburban railway stations around Pune are also set for major upgrades over the next 1,000 days.
At Hadapsar Railway Station, work on a fourth platform is underway after the completion of three existing platforms. The expansion is expected to facilitate the operation of five additional trains.
At Khadki Railway Station, platforms 3 and 4 have already been modernised, while plans are in place to construct another platform. Shivajinagar Railway Station will also receive an additional platform and a new stabling line.
Railway authorities plan to integrate the development of stations including Khadki, Pune, Ghorpadi, Hadapsar, Shivajinagar, Fursungi, and Alandi as part of a unified infrastructure enhancement programme.
Better Connectivity Across Maharashtra
Once completed, the upgraded railway network is expected to support the introduction of new train services connecting Pune with major regions of Maharashtra, including Konkan, Marathwada, Vidarbha, Western Maharashtra, and North Maharashtra.
Officials believe the enhanced infrastructure will make rail travel more convenient and improve connectivity for passengers travelling across the state.
Mumbai-Pune Bullet Train Corridor Proposed
The announcement also highlighted progress on India’s high-speed rail network. While construction of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train project is advancing rapidly, railway authorities have included a proposed 170-km Mumbai-Pune Bullet Train corridor among seven new high-speed rail routes under consideration.
If approved and implemented, the corridor could reduce travel time between Mumbai and Pune to just 48 minutes. A proposed Pune-Hyderabad Bullet Train route covering approximately 500 km could further cut travel time between the two cities to around two hours and eight minutes.
Dedicated Freight Corridor Along Samruddhi Expressway
To strengthen logistics and industrial growth, railway planners have also proposed a dedicated freight corridor connecting the ports of JNPT and Vadhvan with Vidarbha and Marathwada.
The freight corridor is expected to run alongside the Samruddhi Expressway, providing direct port connectivity to nearly 75 percent of Maharashtra and significantly reducing transportation costs for industries and agricultural producers.
