Hyderabad: A 19-year-old engineering student was found dead in his hostel room, in Hyderabad, after allegedly being harassed and forced to pay a bar bill of ₹10,000, police said on Monday.

The deceased, Sai Teja, a second-year engineering student at a private college, belonged to a Scheduled Tribe community. Before his death, he recorded a video claiming that a group of students had pressured him to pay for alcohol at a bar in Medipally on Sunday evening.

“I was going to college. Four or five people came and threatened me. They are demanding money and hitting me. I am very scared. What should I do? Please save me,” Sai Teja said in the recording.

According to police, the group of students had visited a bar between 4 pm and 8 pm, where the dispute arose over settling the bill. Officials confirmed that this was not a case of ragging, but one of harassment and financial extortion.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Malkajgiri Zone) said: “It was after the party that the boy returned to his hostel and took the extreme step. The suspects have been charged with abetment to suicide, extortion, and violation of the SC/ST Act.”

Police teams are currently tracing the students named in the case.

Sai Teja’s family and their lawyer travelled over 300 km to Hyderabad after receiving news of his death. Advocate Kishore, who accompanied them, alleged that the student was pressured by seniors to consume alcohol and then forced to foot the bill.

The body has been shifted for post-mortem as investigations continue.

The incident has sparked concerns over peer pressure, harassment, and the vulnerability of students living away from home, especially those from marginalised communities.
