Parking Slot or Party Hall? Pune Resident Furious as Society Member Turns Allotted Space Into Birthday Venue

Parking lots are meant for vehicles, but one Pune housing society saw an unusual twist when a designated slot was turned into a birthday party venue — sparking outrage from the resident who owns the space.

The incident came to light through a Reddit post on the r/Pune forum, where a user shared a video showing their allotted parking area being used for a birthday celebration hosted by a society committee member. The space had been converted into a buffet setup with tables, decorations, and catering — all without the resident’s permission.

The resident explained that upon confronting the committee member, instead of receiving an apology, they were told to park outside the premises or in someone else’s slot. “My society’s committee member organised his niece’s birthday and didn’t even inform me. When I raised the issue, he casually suggested I park outside,” the user wrote.

The post quickly triggered discussions about legal remedies and the misuse of personal property within housing societies. Some Redditors suggested filing a formal complaint with the society’s secretary and chairman, as well as escalating the matter to the registrar or even the local police. Others highlighted that any use of allotted parking, even temporarily, requires prior consent from the owner.

The incident also drew criticism for an unnecessary mention of the committee member’s regional background, with many pointing out that the core issue was the violation of rights and lack of courtesy, not identity.

The debate reflects wider concerns about accountability in cooperative housing societies, where designated amenities like parking spaces are often misused, leading to friction among residents.
