Say Goodbye To Your Old PIN Codes! Learn to Generate Your DIGIPIN
India Post partners with ISRO to launch the new 10-digit DIGIPIN system for pinpoint accuracy.
In a landmark move to modernize India’s addressing system, the Department of Posts has introduced DIGIPIN, a 10-digit alphanumeric code that precisely identifies every location in the country — right down to a 4×4 meter grid. Developed in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad, ISRO, and the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), this innovation marks the end of India’s 50-year-old six-digit PIN code era.
A New Era of Addressing
The traditional Postal Index Number (PIN) system, launched in 1972, simplified sorting and delivery of mail but often fell short in accuracy — especially in dense urban zones or remote rural areas. DIGIPIN changes that by assigning a unique, location-specific code to every spot in the country.
“Now that we want precision and other modern tools to reach the destination, we need a standardized addressing system,” said Vivek Daksh, Deputy DG, Department of Posts.
He added, “Using this PIN will enhance the precision of address location. This system, jointly developed by IIT Hyderabad and NRSC-ISRO, will bring a revolution in India.”
How DIGIPIN Works
Each DIGIPIN corresponds to a specific latitude and longitude coordinate. This ensures an address can be identified within a 4-meter square grid — far more precise than traditional pin codes that cover entire localities.
What makes DIGIPIN even more revolutionary is its offline functionality, allowing users to access location codes even without internet connectivity.
Applications Beyond Mail
The new system is set to streamline:
- E-commerce and courier deliveries
- Emergency response services (ambulance, police, fire)
- Cab and logistics operations
- Government and utility services
In emergencies, for example, sharing your DIGIPIN with responders eliminates the need for lengthy directions — ensuring faster arrival and improved accuracy.
How to Generate Your DIGIPIN
Creating your unique digital address is simple:
- Visit the official portal: dac.indiapost.gov.in/mydigipin/home
- Allow location access on your device.
- The system will automatically assign a DIGIPIN for your current location.
- Use this code for postal deliveries, cab bookings, emergency services, and more.
Nationwide Rollout and Support
To ensure smooth implementation, India Post has partnered with leading institutions including IIM and IISc Bangalore to study and strengthen the digital PIN ecosystem.
The initiative aims to make last-mile connectivity seamless across urban and rural India.
A Leap Toward Digital Precision
The introduction of DIGIPIN marks a transformative step in India’s digital infrastructure — enhancing accuracy, speed, and reliability across logistics and communication networks.
While the familiar six-digit PIN won’t disappear overnight, the future is clear: a smarter, location-precise system is here to stay.
