Pune Metro to Build 508-Metre Foot-Over-Bridge at Chandni Chowk to Ease Traffic and Improve Connectivity
The new FOB will link the metro station to the national highway, reducing pedestrian congestion and offering safer access for commuters
Pune residents have reason to cheer, as the long-standing traffic issues at Chandni Chowk are finally set to ease. Pune Metro has announced plans to construct a 508-metre-long foot-over-bridge (FOB) near the Chandni Chowk Metro Station on the Bengaluru–Mumbai National Highway bypass.
This FOB will connect directly to the existing National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) foot-over-bridge, allowing commuters to easily cross the highway and access the metro station from either side. It will also provide smoother movement for passengers boarding long-distance buses heading to Bengaluru, Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara, and Mumbai, as well as for daily travellers to areas such as Hinjewadi, Chakan, and Pirangut.
The Metro Line 2 extension from Vanaz to Chandni Chowk has been expanded to 1,123 metres and will include two stations — Kothrud Depot and Chandni Chowk. Officials said the foot-over-bridge will significantly cut walking time, reduce the risk of accidents, and streamline foot traffic at the busy junction.
The project is currently in the planning phase, with detailed designs and approvals pending. In addition to the FOB, work has also begun on double-decker flyovers at Kothrud Depot and on Karve Road to further decongest the area.
Authorities noted that after the route was extended to Chandni Chowk, concerns were raised about potential traffic jams in the area. The 508-metre FOB is part of the solution to ensure safe and seamless access for the public.
With this development, Pune Metro aims to strengthen west-side connectivity, ease pedestrian movement, and resolve the persistent traffic chaos at Chandni Chowk.
