Maharashtra Govt Approves MoU for Pune Metro Phase 2 Extensions to Wagholi and Chandni Chowk
Pune Metro To Launch ‘Coach Restaurant’ Near District Court Station
The Maharashtra government has taken a significant step forward in expanding Pune’s metro network by approving a tripartite Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the Phase 2 extensions. The new corridors will connect Vanaz to Chandni Chowk (Corridor 2A) and Ramwadi to Wagholi (Vitthalwadi) (Corridor 2B), enhancing connectivity across the city.
The MoU clearly outlines the financial and operational responsibilities of all stakeholders involved. Maha-Metro has been tasked with financing the project through Transit-Oriented Development (TOD), the development of government-owned land, and by utilizing additional Floor Space Index (FSI). Officials have also stated that any expenditure exceeding the approved Detailed Project Report (DPR) will require prior approval from the State Finance Department. Should additional costs arise, they will be covered using Maha-Metro’s Dedicated Urban Transport Fund.
The Union government gave its approval for Phase 2 of the Pune Metro in July 2025. The expansion will add 12.75 km of elevated track and 13 stations to the existing network. The estimated cost for this phase is ₹3,626.24 crore, which will be shared between the Centre and the state government.
Atul Gadgil, Director (Works) at Maha-Metro, remarked, “Finalizing the tri-party agreement is a crucial milestone. With the state government’s approval in place, we have forwarded the MoU to the central government for their sanction. Once cleared, we will proceed to the next stage, including mobilizing funds and appointing project consultants.”
Phase 1 of the Pune Metro, which was approved back in 2017, has been fully operational since September 2024. It spans 33.28 km and serves 31 stations across the city. In addition to the new Phase 2 corridors, construction is underway on two other extensions—from Swargate to Katraj and from PCMC to Nigdi—adding over 9 km to the metro network.
With these developments, Pune is steadily moving towards a more robust urban transit system. “The signing of the tripartite MoU marks a pivotal step in expanding Pune Metro and improving urban mobility, setting the stage for future growth and efficient public transport in the city,” Gadgil added.
