Celebrating the 556th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji

Guru Nanak Jayanti, also known as Gurpurab or Prakash Utsav, marks the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism and the first of the ten Sikh Gurus. This year, people across India and the world celebrate his 556th birth anniversary, remembering his divine wisdom and the values that continue to illuminate humanity even centuries later.

Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born in 1469 in Talwandi, now called Nankana Sahib in present-day Pakistan. From an early age, he displayed extraordinary spiritual depth. Through his journeys and teachings, he spread a simple yet profound message — to live with honesty, humility, compassion and devotion to one God, Ik Onkar, meaning “there is one divine light in all.”

His teachings laid the foundation of Sikh philosophy and played a crucial role in social reform. Guru Nanak Dev Ji challenged discrimination, caste barriers, gender inequality and superficial rituals, urging people instead to embrace truth, equality, and service to humanity.

A Day of Devotion and Togetherness
Guru Nanak Jayanti is celebrated with prayers, hymns, processions, and the spirit of seva (selfless service). Gurdwaras around the world illuminate the night with candles and kirtan, while devotees gather to offer langar, the community kitchen that symbolises equality and inclusivity.

From early morning Prabhat Pheris to the reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, the day brings people of all backgrounds together, reinforcing the universal values Guru Nanak Dev Ji advocated.

As gurdwaras resonate with shabads and the fragrance of langar fills the air, the celebration becomes a reminder to live each day with kindness, humility and love — the essence of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s message.
