Pune, November 6, 2025 — The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to roll out a paid parking system on a pilot basis starting December, aiming to tackle the city’s persistent traffic congestion and disorderly parking. Officials have confirmed that the technical groundwork is nearly complete, with operations expected to begin by the end of November.

Under the initiative, paid parking will be introduced on five key roads across Pune’s central and suburban areas. The proposed rates are ₹4 for two-wheelers and ₹20 for four-wheelers. Parking will be chargeable between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m., while it will remain free thereafter.

Illegal and permanent parking on busy stretches has long been a concern for citizens and traffic police alike. Responding to repeated complaints, PMC revived the long-pending proposal that was originally approved in principle in March 2018.

Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram recently reviewed the plan with senior traffic officials and approved measures such as creating “no parking” zones within 50 meters of key junctions and designating certain stretches for paid parking.

Dinkar Gojare, Head of PMC’s Special Projects Department, said, “The proposal will be presented before the Standing Committee soon. The tender process will conclude next week, and the system will be implemented on a pilot basis from next month.”

The pilot project will cover the following roads:

  • Junglee Maharaj Road and Namdar Gopalkrishna Gokhale Road (Fergusson College Road)
  • Laxmi Road
  • High Street, Balewadi
  • Viman Nagar Road
  • Bibvewadi Road

If the initiative proves successful, the paid parking system will be expanded to other parts of the city in subsequent phases, officials confirmed.
