Pune News: Over 11% Teaching Posts Vacant In PMC Schools, RTI Reveals Staffing Crisis
Pune, November 18, 2025: A Right to Information (RTI) query has revealed a major shortage of teachers in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC)-run schools, with more than 11.25% of sanctioned posts lying vacant. The RTI was filed by Krunnal Gharre, vice president of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Pune City, who received the official response on October 10.
According to the data, PMC has sanctioned 2,840 teaching positions, of which 320 remain unfilled as of June 13, 2025. AAP leaders said the figures expose a widening gap between the government’s promises of educational reforms and the ground reality in civic schools.
In a joint statement, Gharre and Shital Kandelkar, president of AAP Shikshak Aghadi, criticised the administration for failing to provide adequate staff. They said that while authorities frequently highlight initiatives such as digital classrooms and quality education, the severe shortage of teachers is depriving thousands of children of basic learning opportunities.
They further noted that unattended classrooms can have long-term social consequences. Gharre remarked that the lack of proper schooling contributes to rising juvenile crime and undermines efforts to build responsible future citizens. AAP also announced plans to file a writ petition in the Bombay High Court, alleging that the vacancies amount to a violation of children’s fundamental right to education.
The RTI response also detailed the composition of PMC’s 313 schools: 234 Marathi-medium, 46 English-medium, 31 Urdu-medium, and two Kannada-medium institutions. Snehal Ukranke, Information and Administrative Officer of the Primary Education Department, provided the data.
