Pune, June 25, 2026:

A special one-day National Pulse Polio Immunization Campaign will be conducted across Pune district on Sunday, June 28, 2026, with a target of administering polio vaccine doses to 4,53,510 children in the 0–5 years age group, according to the District Health Officer of the Pune Zilla Parishad.

Polio is a highly serious disease that can cause permanent disability and, in some cases, death among children. The disease not only affects an individual’s physical well-being but also has long-term social and economic consequences. To achieve the global objective of complete polio eradication, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Government of India have been implementing the National Pulse Polio Programme since 1995.

Due to effective surveillance of Acute Flaccid Paralysis (AFP) among children aged 0–15 years and successful implementation of mop-up vaccination drives, the number of polio cases in India has steadily declined. While the country reported 4,316 polio cases in 1998, no case has been detected since 2011. Pune district has remained polio-free since 1999.

However, sporadic cases of polio continue to be reported in neighboring countries such as Afghanistan and Pakistan, making continued preventive vaccination campaigns essential. As part of this effort, Maharashtra, including Pune district, will conduct the immunization drive on June 28.

For the campaign, 3,839 Pulse Polio booths will be established across the district, supported by 9,219 personnel. Additionally, 1,834 booth supervisors, 2,908 house-to-house teams, 1,756 house-visit supervisors, 124 transit teams, 78 night teams, 222 mobile teams, and 65 district-level supervisors have been deployed.

Children who are unable to visit vaccination booths on the campaign day will be covered through door-to-door visits. Health workers will administer vaccine doses at homes for the next three days in rural areas and five days in urban areas following a one-day break.

Health staff, ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers and helpers, Community Health Officers (CHOs), teachers, and representatives of voluntary organizations will participate in the campaign. Special booths and mobile teams will also be stationed at bus stands, railway stations, markets, pilgrimage sites, religious places, travel routes, and private healthcare facilities to ensure that no child is left unvaccinated.

Extensive preparations have been made for the successful implementation of the campaign, including training programmes, action plan development, vaccine distribution, awareness activities, and coordination meetings at district and taluka levels.

The district administration and health department have appealed to parents to bring every child between 0 and 5 years of age to the nearest Pulse Polio vaccination centre on June 28 and ensure they receive the life-saving two drops of the polio vaccine.
