Pune News: After Years of Delay, Wakad’s 25-Lakh Litre Water Tank Finally Becomes Operational
Pune, November 21, 2025: After more than a decade of delays and persistent water struggles, the 25-lakh litre water tank in Wakad will finally be inaugurated and become operational today. The ceremony brings relief to residents of this rapidly developing area, though it comes months after its originally scheduled monsoon inauguration.
The project, sanctioned years ago, faced numerous obstacles including court cases and three location changes before construction finally began. “Even though it is delayed, there is joy that the municipal water tank in our society is finally being inaugurated tomorrow,” shared Siddhesh Patil, a resident from Sonigara Kesar Society. “Before this tank was built, this area was often a hotspot for anti-social activities, which have now reduced considerably.”
The tank’s completion marks a significant victory for Wakad residents who have been fighting for regular water supply since 2012. Residents of over 250 societies have held protests, conducted rallies, and consistently followed up with authorities to address the water crisis in the area facing rapid infrastructure growth but inadequate water access.
The new reservoir is expected to solve water supply issues for approximately 30 percent of Wakad residents. The project saw significant delays, including a three-year setback during the COVID-19 pandemic, before work finally picked up pace. Originally scheduled for inauguration during the monsoon season four months ago, the tank’s operationalization was postponed until now.
Local representatives have confirmed that all construction work has been completed and related infrastructure is ready. The municipal corporation has been actively following up to ensure the tank becomes operational, promising that full water supply will commence immediately after the inauguration ceremony.
