Pimpri-Chinchwad To Get Metro Boost As Nigdi–Chakan Corridor Planned In New DPR
Pune, November 26, 2025: Pune residents have received a major boost in public transport connectivity as the Union Cabinet has officially approved Pune Metro Rail Project Phase-2. With this approval, Pune’s metro network will now extend beyond 100 km, promising faster, smoother, and more comfortable travel for the growing population of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
What Does the New Route Include?
Phase-2 features two crucial corridors covering 31.636 km with 28 elevated stations.
• Line 4: Kharadi – Hadapsar – Swargate – Khadakwasla
• Line 4A: Nal Stop – Warje – Manik Bagh
The project is estimated to cost ₹9,857.85 crore, jointly funded by the Central Government, Maharashtra Government, and external funding agencies. The completion period has been set at five years.
Why This Matters for Pune
The new lines will directly connect major economic and residential zones. The Kharadi IT hub, the industrial belt of Hadapsar, and the critical Swargate junction will now be seamlessly linked. These routes also integrate with the existing Line 1 and Line 2, strengthening Pune’s multimodal mobility system, which connects metro, rail, and bus networks.
Future extensions towards Loni Kalbhor and Saswad are also being considered.
Traffic Relief for Key Roads
Phase-2 is expected to significantly reduce congestion on Solapur Road, Magarpatta Road, Sinhagad Road, Karve Road, and the Mumbai–Bengaluru Highway. Metro travel will offer a cleaner, safer, and more eco-friendly commute, reducing air pollution and saving time.
The Kharadi–Khadakwasla stretch is expected to carry the highest ridership, becoming a major east-west mobility spine.
Implementation
Maha-Metro will execute the entire project, overseeing civil, mechanical, electrical, and systems work. Survey and design activities are already underway at a rapid pace.
