Dashcam footage shows how Tata’s ADAS suite stopped the EV just in time, preventing a major accident on a narrow rural road.
A dramatic incident captured on a Tata Harrier.EV’s dashcam has highlighted once again how crucial Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) is on Indian roads. The EV narrowly avoided hitting a small child who ran unexpectedly across the road from behind a parked car, with the ADAS system reacting faster than any human driver could.
The Harrier.EV was travelling through a narrow, unmarked stretch surrounded by vegetation, likely a rural area. The SUV was moving slowly and cautiously when it approached a parked white Maruti Dzire on one side and an autorickshaw on the opposite side, where a man and two women were standing. As the EV neared the Dzire, a young girl suddenly darted out from behind it, attempting to reach the people near the auto.

The timing could not have been worse, the child appeared just a few feet ahead of the approaching Harrier.EV, giving the human driver virtually no chance to react. The vehicle’s ADAS sensors immediately detected the child, and the AEB system intervened. The EV came to a complete halt in time, avoiding any contact. While the girl was safe, her family appeared visibly shaken by the sudden scare.
The incident demonstrates how AEB can be life-saving, especially in India’s unpredictable traffic conditions. From animals crossing highways to wrong-side driving, stray vehicles, and sudden pedestrian movement, road scenarios can change in an instant. In situations like these, even alert drivers may not respond quickly enough.

ADAS systems, equipped with cameras and radars, continuously monitor the surroundings and calculate distance to objects. When they detect an imminent collision, AEB automatically applies maximum braking force to prevent or minimise impact. In this case, the EV’s low speed—likely under 40 km/h—also improved the braking outcome. The Harrier.EV’s AEB functions both at low (sub-40 km/h) and higher speeds (80–100 km/h), but predictable results are more likely at slower speeds.
Had the vehicle been a non-ADAS model or travelling even slightly faster, the outcome might have been very different. The incident serves as a reminder of how critical technology-led safety interventions are becoming, especially as more mass-market cars in India adopt ADAS features.
