Pune Police Serve Notices To 200+ Ganesh Mandals For Breaching Noise Norms During Visarjan
Pune, 26 November 2025: The Pune Police have issued notices to over 200 Ganesh mandals for exceeding permitted noise levels during this year’s immersion procession. The action follows a detailed analysis of sound readings recorded across the city on visarjan day.
Mandals have been instructed to appear before the Deputy Commissioner of Police of their respective divisions. They are required to submit written explanations along with relevant documents, including permission letters, details of sound-system contractors, and copies of processional permits.
The notice clearly states that failure to appear will be considered as non-cooperation, and police will initiate direct legal proceedings under the Maharashtra Police Act and the Environment Protection Act.
This year’s visarjan on September 7 was one of Pune’s longest, stretching into several hours. Despite repeated warnings from Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar to restrict high-decibel speakers and powerful lighting, many mandals used sound equipment beyond the permissible limits.
Under the Environment Protection Act, violation of noise-control regulations can attract penalties of up to ₹1 lakh and imprisonment of up to five years. Police have given all mandals seven days to provide justification for their violations and explain why action should not be taken against them.
