Maharashtra: Schools to Remain Shut on December 5. Know Why.
Schools across Maharashtra will remain closed on December 5 as the State Principals’ Federation has announced a statewide strike. A meeting regarding this was recently held in Pune, where the federation finalised the decision. On December 5, all schools in the state will stay shut, and protest marches will be taken to the offices of District Collectors, the federation clarified.
Teachers and non-teaching staff from primary and secondary schools have several long-pending demands. To push for these demands, the Maharashtra State Principals’ Federation will organise marches in every district. A key demand is that teachers appointed before 2013 should not be required to clear the TET exam. Many teachers claim that making TET mandatory will negatively impact a large number of them.
Another major demand is the cancellation of the government resolution issued on March 15, 2024, regarding sanctioning posts, and to implement approvals based on the old criteria. Teachers are also demanding that the Shikshan Sevak scheme be scrapped and that all teachers be granted regular pay scales. These demands have been pending for many years without any concrete action from the government, prompting the federation to finally call for a strike.
The strike is expected to significantly impact schools across the state. Since teachers will participate in district-level marches, they will not be present in schools, resulting in a complete shutdown on that day. With December 5 falling on a Friday, teachers are now watching closely to see if the government takes any decision within the next four days. If the government responds positively, the strike may be withdrawn.
