The RBI has granted in-principle approval for the bank’s fourth India branch, aimed at strengthening corporate banking services.

JPMorgan Chase & Co. is set to expand its physical presence in India for the first time in almost ten years, after receiving in-principle approval from the Reserve Bank of India to open a new branch in Pune. This will become the global financial giant’s fourth branch in the country, adding to its existing locations in Mumbai and Bengaluru.

The move marks the bank’s first branch approval since 2016, when it was cleared to open three additional offices. While the new Pune branch has been approved at the preliminary level, full operations will begin only after all regulatory requirements laid out by the RBI are completed.

The Pune branch will focus on strengthening JPMorgan’s corporate banking capabilities in India. The bank is expected to offer a wide suite of services including transaction banking, term lending, and customised financial solutions for large institutional and corporate clients. With Pune emerging as a major financial and technology hub, the bank’s expansion reflects its strategic push into high-growth markets.

India’s rapid economic expansion, strong credit demand and increasing corporate activity continue to attract foreign banks. Industry observers say JPMorgan’s latest move underlines its confidence in India’s economic fundamentals and stable regulatory environment. Over the past few years, the bank has also expanded its operations in areas such as investment banking, asset management and transaction services, alongside opening a new campus to support its growing workforce.

The upcoming Pune office is expected to deepen JPMorgan’s long-term commitment to India and strengthen its competitive position in one of the world’s fastest-growing financial markets.
