Maharashtra Govt Approves Seven New Police Stations and Additional Zones in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad
Pune City Police Undergo Major Reshuffle As 25 Inspectors Shifted
Rapid urban growth and rising crime rates in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad have prompted the Maharashtra State Government to expand policing infrastructure across the district. On Sunday evening, the state government issued orders for the creation of seven new police stations—five in Pune city and two in Pimpri-Chinchwad—and sanctioned additional police zones and senior-level posts to strengthen law enforcement.
Expansion in Pune City
Pune city will now see five new police stations at Narhe, Laxminagar, Yewalewadi, Manjari, and Lohegaon. Each station has been carved out of existing jurisdictions:
Narhe from Sinhagad Road
Laxminagar from Yerawada
Manjari from Hadapsar
Lohegaon from Airport police station
Yewalewadi from Kondhwa and Bharati Vidyapeeth
Alongside the new stations, the city will now have two additional zones—Zone VI and Zone VII, increasing the total to seven zones. Zone VI will cover Hadapsar, Kalepadal, Mundhwa, Phursungi, Manjari, and Lonikalbhor police stations, while Zone VII will include Lonikand, Wagholi, Lohegaon, Airport, Kharadi, and Chandannagar. The restructuring will distribute responsibilities more evenly among zones, allowing better monitoring and faster response to citizens’ complaints.
The government has sanctioned 830 additional posts for the new stations, with roughly 166 personnel per station, ensuring adequate manpower for smooth functioning. Expenditure approved for establishing these stations stands at ₹67.41 crore, with ₹2.36 crore allocated for setting up the new zones.
Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar emphasized that these measures were planned keeping in mind the city’s future growth. “Previously, Zones IV and V had too many police stations under their watch. The new structure will allow more effective supervision and improved policing outcomes,” he stated.
Enhancements in Pimpri-Chinchwad
The Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissionerate will also undergo significant expansion. Two new police stations—Chakan South (carved from Chakan and Alandi) and North Mahalunge (from Mahalunge MIDC)—will be added, bringing the total to 25 stations.
A fourth zone has been created to better manage the growing workload. Zone I will cover Nigdi, Chinchwad, Pimpri, Sant Tukaramnagar, Dapodi, and Sangvi; Zone II will include Hinjewadi, Bavdhan, Ravet, Wakad, and Kalewadi; Zone III will have Bhosari MIDC, Bhosari, Dighi, Chakan, South Chakan, and Alandi; Zone IV will encompass Shirgaon, Dehu Road, Talegaon Dabhade, Talegaon MIDC, Mahalunge MIDC, and North Mahalunge MIDC.
Along with the new zones, three additional Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) and six Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs) will join the commissionerate. The government has also approved 332 new posts for the two stations, aimed at strengthening law enforcement in rapidly developing industrial and residential areas.
Pimpri-Chinchwad Commissioner Vinoy Kumar Choubey remarked that the expansion would significantly enhance policing efficiency and ensure better safety across the twin city. Deployment of personnel will follow a phased staffing approach, with recruitment already underway.
By establishing new zones, police stations, and senior-level positions, the state ensures faster response times, effective supervision, and equitable distribution of responsibilities among law enforcement officers. Residents can anticipate quicker redressal of complaints and a stronger presence of police in their neighborhoods.
