Pune: To ensure a clean and healthy environment for 27 villages across 16 clusters in the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) area, PMRDA has undertaken a major sewage (sewerage) infrastructure project at an estimated cost of ₹1,209.08 crore.

A crucial coordination and review meeting to ensure the effective progress and implementation of these projects was held on December 16, 2025, at the PMRDA headquarters in Akurdi, under the chairmanship of Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Yogesh Mhase.

The meeting was attended by MLA Shankarrao Mandekar, Additional Metropolitan Commissioner Deepak Singla, along with sarpanchs, deputy sarpanchs, and gram vikas officers from the concerned 27 villages. Senior officials including Chief Engineers Rinaz Pathan and Prashant Patil, and Executive Engineer Anita Kulkarni, provided detailed technical briefings on the projects.

The ambitious initiative aims to strengthen sanitation infrastructure, establish advanced sewage disposal systems, and implement efficient and cost-effective wastewater treatment to reduce river pollution. Emphasis will also be placed on the reuse of treated water for agriculture and industrial purposes. Dr Mhase directed the administration to complete the cluster-wise projects within one year and instructed officials to immediately prepare land acquisition proposals required for the projects.

Detailed technical explanations for each scheme were presented by the appointed consultancy agencies. These included data collection methods, processing, comprehensive planning approaches, and the adoption of sustainable, low-maintenance, and manpower-efficient modern technologies. The project plan also includes a five-year Operation and Maintenance (O&M) period after completion.

Land required for sewage treatment plants has been systematically planned, keeping future population growth in mind. As part of environmentally friendly measures, solar energy systems will be integrated into the projects, resulting in significant cost savings. Notably, a 559.404 kWp solar power project has been proposed in the Sanaswadi cluster. Additionally, SCADA-based automated systems will be used for real-time monitoring and operational control of the sewage treatment facilities.

This stakeholder meeting has strengthened coordination between local gram panchayats, the administration, and technical consultants. The project is being viewed as a critical step towards improving sanitation infrastructure and safeguarding the environment in rapidly developing urban growth centres within the Pune metropolitan region.
