Pune Outer Ring Road Western Half Progresses Rapidly, Completion Expected by December 2027
Pune Ring Road Project Accelerates: 172 km Highway Featuring Flyovers, Bridges, and Viaducts to Transform Urban Mobility
Pune: Construction of the western half of the Pune Outer Ring Road is moving at an impressive pace, offering relief to commuters and long-distance travellers alike. The stretch from NH48, the Pune–Bengaluru highway, to the Mumbai–Pune Expressway is currently under rapid development, with all five construction packages on the western side actively underway.
Officials and project observers indicate that if the current momentum continues, the western half of the Outer Ring Road is expected to be completed by December 2027. Once operational, this section is set to significantly reduce traffic pressure on Pune’s existing western bypass, which routinely faces congestion during peak hours.
A major benefit of the western half’s completion will be for motorists travelling towards Mumbai. Vehicles will be able to completely bypass Pune city limits, helping them avoid chronic bottlenecks, particularly at the heavily congested Navale bridge junction. This is expected to improve travel time, road safety, and overall commuting experience for both daily users and interstate traffic.
In contrast, progress on the eastern half of the Pune Outer Ring Road remains comparatively slow. Several key packages, specifically E5, E6, and E7, are yet to be awarded, which has delayed construction activity on that side of the project.
Looking ahead, the Outer Ring Road is also set to play a strategic role in national connectivity. The proposed Pune–Bengaluru greenfield expressway is planned to originate directly from the Pune Outer Ring Road, enabling seamless expressway-level travel between Mumbai and Bengaluru. This integration is expected to strengthen Pune’s position as a major logistics and mobility hub in western India.
With the western half advancing steadily, the project is increasingly seen as a critical upgrade to Pune’s regional transport infrastructure, promising long-term relief from urban congestion and smoother intercity travel.
