Mumbai’s suburban train network is set to receive a major boost with the long-awaited Jogeshwari Railway Terminus on the Western Railway (WR) line finally nearing completion. The first phase of this project is expected to be operational for passengers by June 2026, bringing much-needed relief to the city’s congested train corridors.
Originally, the project was slated for completion by December 2024, but several obstacles—including changes in contractors, land acquisition challenges, and administrative delays—pushed back the timeline. In recent months, Western Railway authorities have accelerated work, and progress is now moving at a steady pace.
Strategic Location
The Jogeshwari Terminus is located in Jogeshwari East, close to the existing Jogeshwari suburban station. It will have excellent connectivity to the Jogeshwari–Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) and Mumbai Metro lines, making it a convenient hub for daily commuters and long-distance travelers alike.
Purpose of the Terminus
The main objective behind establishing Jogeshwari Terminus is to decongest major Mumbai railway stations such as CSMT, Dadar, Bandra, Andheri, and Borivali. By originating and terminating more suburban and long-distance trains from the western suburbs, passenger flow at these heavily crowded stations will ease significantly.
Planned Facilities
The terminus will be equipped with multiple platforms, stabling lines for train maintenance, modern passenger amenities, ample parking space, and seamless integration with road and metro networks.
Significance for Mumbai’s Rail Network
Jogeshwari will be the fourth major railway terminus on the Western Railway line in Mumbai, complementing existing terminals like Bandra and Lokmanya Tilak. The project, estimated to cost around Rs 76.48 crore, is part of the city’s long-term strategy to expand its railway infrastructure beyond South Mumbai.
Operational Benefits
Once fully functional, Jogeshwari Terminus is expected to handle around 24 trains daily. The first phase will include two passenger platforms—one adjacent to the station and another located between two tracks—allowing three long-distance trains to operate simultaneously. In the second phase, additional platforms, a pit line, and a shunting neck will be added to enhance capacity.
Currently, the site serves primarily as an assistant terminal yard for parking trains. Once the terminus is operational, regular long-distance services will commence, providing commuters with more travel options and significantly reducing crowding at Dadar, Mumbai Central, and Bandra Terminus. Senior officials have confirmed that the complete project is expected to be finished by March 2027.
