Coldest Place in Maharashtra | Winter Update: When winter sets in, tourists in Maharashtra usually head straight to hill stations like Mahabaleshwar or Lonavala. However, contrary to popular belief, Mahabaleshwar is not always the coldest place in the state. Recent weather data and temperature trends reveal that another town has often claimed this title.

Maharashtra is known for its diverse geography—hills, coastlines, and scorching summers. Yet, during peak winter, temperatures in some regions drop close to freezing. According to meteorological records, Niphad in Nashik district has frequently emerged as the coldest place in Maharashtra in recent years.

Niphad: Maharashtra’s New Cold Spot

Niphad, famous for its grape farms, has recorded minimum temperatures ranging between 1.8°C and 3°C, with occasional frost formation on crops. Its open terrain and geographical location allow cold northern winds to sweep through the region during winter nights, leading to sharp temperature drops.

Mahabaleshwar: Traditionally Cold, But Not the Coldest

Located at an altitude of 1,438 metres in the Sahyadri ranges, Mahabaleshwar remains one of Maharashtra’s coldest and most pleasant destinations. Winter temperatures here usually hover around 4°C to 5°C. Due to higher humidity, the cold often feels more biting, though the mercury doesn’t dip as low as in Niphad.

Chikhaldara: Vidarbha’s Coldest Hill Station

In eastern Maharashtra, Chikhaldara in Amravati district stands out. Nestled in the Satpura ranges, it often records winter temperatures below 5°C, making it Vidarbha’s coldest location.

Weather experts also note that plateau regions like Pune and Nashik experience low winter temperatures due to a phenomenon known as temperature inversion, further intensifying the chill.
