Pune’s Double-Decker Flyover Near University Chowk To Fully Open Soon, Big Relief For Commuters
Shivajinagar–Baner and Pashan stretches to open in phases as project nears completion
Pune is set to get major relief from chronic traffic congestion near Savitribai Phule Pune University and Ganeshkhind Road, with the city’s ambitious double-decker flyover project entering its final phase. Authorities have confirmed that nearly 90 per cent of the construction work has been completed, and the remaining stretches connecting Shivajinagar to Baner and Pashan are expected to open for traffic by the end of this month and next.
The integrated double-decker structure has been built at University Chowk as part of the Man–Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar Metro project being executed by the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). The first level of the flyover is designed for road traffic, while the upper level will carry the Metro corridor, making it one of the city’s most significant infrastructure upgrades.
The main bridge section between Aundh and Shivajinagar was opened to vehicular traffic on August 20 last year, following an inauguration by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Since then, this stretch has already helped ease peak-hour congestion on Ganeshkhind Road. With the Baner and Pashan sides now nearing completion, traffic flow in the entire corridor is expected to become far smoother.
Officials said the remaining work is largely focused on access ramps. The ramp connecting Shivajinagar to Baner is likely to open by the end of January, while the Pashan-side ramp is expected to be operational by the end of February. Minor utility-related issues are currently being resolved, including coordination for one pending pipeline near the Pashan ramp.
Once fully operational, the flyover will significantly reduce travel time for commuters moving between Shivajinagar, Aundh, Baner and Pashan — areas that have faced severe congestion for years. Vehicles travelling from Aundh and Baner towards Shivajinagar will use two-lane entry ramps that merge into a wider three-lane bridge section. Traffic from Shivajinagar towards Baner and Pashan will enter via a three-lane ramp that later splits into two-lane exits.
The entire double-decker structure, including all ramps, stretches over approximately 1.76 kilometres, while the main bridge section alone spans about 1.3 kilometres. Road surfacing on the Shivajinagar–Baner side has already been completed. The project also includes a 55-metre-long steel girder installed at University Chowk, and direct connectivity to Senapati Bapat Road through dedicated ramps.
A senior PMRDA engineer said the project was specifically planned to address long-standing traffic bottlenecks near the university gate and Ganeshkhind Road. With the flyover opening in full capacity, the overall traffic load in this busy corridor is expected to reduce substantially.
For thousands of daily commuters, the completion of the double-decker flyover promises faster, smoother and more predictable travel, marking a major milestone in Pune’s evolving urban transport network.
