Health Scare at Savitribai Phule Pune University Food Mall: Student Finds Insect in Fruit Plate, Action Demanded
Pune, January 6, 2026: A serious food safety concern has come to light at the Savitribai Phule Pune University food mall after a student reportedly found a poisonous insect in a fruit plate purchased from Poonam Snacks Center. The incident occurred on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi and has once again raised questions about hygiene standards and student health on the university campus.
According to student representative Shiva Barole, a university student visited the Poonam Snacks stall to eat a fruit plate when the insect was discovered in the food. The incident has sparked outrage among students, who say their health is being repeatedly compromised due to poor-quality and unhygienic food being served at the food mall.
Students have warned that such unhygienic conditions can lead to the spread of harmful bacteria and viruses, potentially causing illnesses such as diarrhoea, vomiting, fever and food poisoning. They have stated that in the event of any health emergency, the university administration must take full responsibility.
Barole further alleged that students have lodged multiple complaints in the past regarding substandard food quality at the same stall, but the university administration failed to take any concrete action. He stressed that the issue is not limited to just the fruit plate and demanded a comprehensive quality check of all food items sold at the stall, followed by immediate action.
It was also stated that a member of the university’s canteen committee inspected the stall after the incident. However, as no action has been taken so far, students have expressed strong anger over the recurring negligence.
Student representatives have warned that if strict action is not taken against the concerned stall at the earliest, the university administration will have to face intensified protests from students.
