What began as a simple fever and cough turned life-threatening due to delayed diagnosis, underlining why early medical attention and second opinions matter

A minor cough or low-grade fever is often brushed aside, especially in children and teenagers. But a recent real-life medical emergency has shown how ignoring such symptoms even briefly, can have devastating consequences.

Cardiologist Dr. Ravindra Kulkarni shared details of a critical case that highlights the dangers of delayed diagnosis. A 15-year-old boy was rushed to the emergency room after his condition deteriorated rapidly. For nearly a month, the child had been suffering from persistent fever, cough, and noticeable weight loss. In the final two days before hospitalisation, he developed severe breathlessness.

The family initially believed the illness was minor and opted for homeopathic treatment at home. Instead of improving, the symptoms worsened steadily. By the time the boy reached the hospital, his condition had become critical.

According to the doctor, the child’s heart rate was dangerously high at 180 beats per minute, while his oxygen saturation had dropped to just 60 per cent. He was struggling to breathe and was shifted to ventilator support within an hour of arrival. A chest X-ray revealed pulmonary tuberculosis along with serious complications affecting the lungs. Doctors stated that the next few hours were crucial as treatment was initiated.

Medical experts reviewing the case said the outcome could have been very different if early warning signs had not been ignored.

Doctors stress that a fever or cough lasting more than two to three weeks should never be taken lightly. Persistent symptoms require immediate medical evaluation, especially when accompanied by unexplained weight loss. In children and adolescents, sudden weight loss is considered a major red flag.

The case also dispels the common belief that young age offers protection from serious illnesses. Tuberculosis can affect people of any age, including teenagers, and delaying treatment can allow the disease to progress rapidly.

Another key lesson highlighted by doctors is the importance of seeking a second opinion. If symptoms do not improve with ongoing treatment, families should not hesitate to consult another qualified medical professional. Changing treatment is not an insult to any doctor, it can be a life-saving decision made at the right time.

Experts believe that in this case, if proper investigations and treatment had begun earlier, the child may not have required ventilator support. Diseases like tuberculosis can escalate suddenly and become life-threatening if diagnosis is delayed.

Doctors advise that no discomfort should be tolerated for long. Early consultation, timely tests such as X-rays and blood work, and prompt medical decisions can prevent complications and save lives.
