Four-Day Liquor Ban Announced in Maharashtra Ahead of Civic Polls
Ahead of the upcoming municipal corporation elections, the Maharashtra government has imposed a four-day prohibition on alcohol across 29 civic body jurisdictions where polling is scheduled. The restriction will remain in force from January 13 to January 16, during which the sale, purchase, and consumption of liquor will be strictly banned.
According to state officials, the decision has been taken as a precautionary step to preserve public peace and order during the election process. Authorities believe that enforcing a dry period helps create a calm environment, reduces the chances of disturbances, and supports the conduct of transparent and fair elections.
The dry period will commence on January 13, coinciding with the official end of election campaigning. From that point onward, all political rallies, public meetings, and campaign-related activities must cease, marking the start of heightened election enforcement.
During these four days, liquor shops, bars, permit rooms, and all establishments licensed to sell alcohol will remain shut within the limits of the concerned municipal corporations. Officials have warned that anyone found violating the ban will face strict action under existing laws, including penalties and legal consequences.
The administration has appealed to citizens, voters, and business owners to cooperate fully with the restrictions. Emphasizing the importance of the measure, an official stated that declaring dry days during elections is a standard preventive practice aimed at avoiding untoward incidents and ensuring a smooth and peaceful voting process.
Polling will be held on January 15 in major urban centers such as Mumbai, Pune, and Pimpri-Chinchwad, while vote counting is scheduled for January 16. To ensure law and order, authorities have stepped up surveillance and enforcement, particularly in sensitive areas.
With increased monitoring and public cooperation, the state hopes to conduct the elections without disruption, reinforcing the democratic process while maintaining safety and stability throughout the election period.
