State Cabinet clears major relief for commuters using Mumbai–Navi Mumbai’s key connectivity bridge

The Maharashtra Cabinet has decided to extend the 50 per cent toll concession on the Atal Setu for another year, bringing continued relief to thousands of daily commuters and long-distance travellers. The concession will remain in effect from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2026, ensuring affordable and smoother travel between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

The Atal Behari Vajpayee Sewri–Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, a 21-kilometre long sea bridge, has rapidly become one of the most crucial transport links in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. With the Navi Mumbai International Airport now operational, the importance of this bridge has increased further, making toll affordability a major concern for regular users.

In addition to extending the 50 per cent discount, the Cabinet has also approved complete toll exemption for electric motor cars and electric buses using Atal Setu. This decision strengthens the state’s push towards promoting clean mobility while simultaneously reducing operational costs for electric public transport services and private EV owners.

The bridge, constructed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), was envisioned as a game-changer for faster connectivity between South Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. Since its opening, traffic volume has grown steadily, especially during peak travel hours and airport-bound movements. The toll concession is expected to prevent financial burden on commuters and maintain consistent traffic flow.

The state government had originally approved the 50 per cent toll concession during its Cabinet meeting held on January 4, 2024. That decision laid the foundation for making Atal Setu more accessible to the public. The latest extension confirms the government’s commitment to sustaining affordable connectivity on this strategic corridor.

Officials believe the continued discount will help reduce congestion on older road networks and encourage motorists to use Atal Setu more frequently. The bridge shortens travel time significantly between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai and has already improved logistics movement, airport access, and daily commuting efficiency.

Electric vehicle users stand to benefit the most from the new decision. Full toll exemption for electric cars and buses is expected to boost EV adoption while supporting greener transportation policies. For electric public transport operators, this exemption can lower operational costs and encourage wider deployment of electric buses on inter-city routes.

Along with extending the concession, the Cabinet has also approved updated toll rates for a single journey for other categories of vehicles. These rates have been finalised as part of the broader toll policy for the 2026 calendar year, ensuring clarity and stability for both private and commercial users.

The Atal Setu has emerged as a critical backbone of Mumbai’s future infrastructure planning. It connects major business districts, industrial hubs, residential zones, and the international airport corridor. Maintaining affordable toll rates is considered essential to ensure that this infrastructure remains accessible to all sections of society.

Commuters have welcomed the Cabinet’s decision, especially daily office-goers and transport operators who rely heavily on the bridge. Many believe the continued concession will significantly reduce monthly travel expenses while offering faster and safer transit compared to traditional routes.

With rising fuel prices and increasing commuting costs, the extension of the toll discount provides timely financial relief. It also reflects the government’s broader approach of balancing infrastructure development with public affordability.

The notification for the extended concession period will formally apply from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2026. Until then, existing toll structures and concessions will continue as previously notified.

This move is expected to strengthen Atal Setu’s role as the primary gateway between Mumbai and Navi Mumbai while promoting sustainable transport and economic efficiency across the region.
