Pune Ranks 5th Globally For Traffic Congestion, Highest In India After Bengaluru; TomTom Traffic Index 2025
Pune, January 24, 2026: Pune has once again featured among the world’s most traffic-congested cities, ranking 5th globally in the TomTom Traffic Index 2025. While the city showed slight improvement compared to last year’s 4th position, the report highlights persistent bottlenecks across major urban centres worldwide due to rising vehicle density.
According to the report, Bengaluru ranked 2nd globally, making it the worst in India, while Mumbai stood at 18th place. The global list covers data from 492 major cities, using aggregated GPS-based traffic speed analysis to measure travel delays and average commuting speeds.
Despite Pune traffic police earlier noting some improvement in movement speeds, the new index shows that congestion remains a serious challenge. In 2025, a distance that should ideally take 15 minutes covered only 4.5 km in Pune, compared to 4.2 km in Bengaluru. Pune commuters reportedly lost 152 hours last year due to traffic jams.
India had multiple entries in the global top 50, including Bengaluru, Pune, Hyderabad, Chennai, Jaipur, Kolkata, and New Delhi, underscoring the nationwide issue of urban transportation stress.
Global rankings were led by Mexico City, making it the most congested city in the world in 2025.
