Early Alphonso Mangoes Arrive in Pune, Commanding Premium Prices Ahead of Season
Pune’s fruit markets got a sweet surprise much earlier than usual as the first batch of Konkan Alphonso mangoes made a pre-season appearance, instantly becoming the centre of attraction due to their rarity and price tag. The limited consignment fetched a remarkable ₹15,000 per crate, reflecting strong demand for the king of mangoes even before the official season begins.
The early arrival took place at Pune’s Gultekdi Market Yard, where traders and buyers gathered to witness the high-value sale. The mangoes were brought in from the Jaitapur region of Ratnagiri district and consisted of four crates, each holding three dozen Alphonso mangoes. Given their premium quality and early availability, the entire consignment was purchased by commission agent Yuvraj Kachi.
The occasion was marked with traditional ceremonies, attended by Pune Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC) director Ganesh Ghule and fruits and vegetables department head Balasaheb Konde, highlighting the significance of the first seasonal arrival. Along with the Alphonso mangoes, the market also received one crate of Kesar mangoes, adding to the early excitement among traders.
Market officials explained that although small quantities of Alphonso mangoes have reached Pune sporadically this year, overall supply remains extremely limited. This scarcity has kept prices unusually high. Traders believe, however, that once arrivals become regular and volumes rise during the peak season, rates are likely to ease.
Mango traders are optimistic about the months ahead, citing favourable winter weather as a positive sign for this year’s crop. Extended cold conditions helped protect mango blossoms, preventing early damage and improving flowering across orchards. As a result, expectations are high for a better harvest compared to last year.
If weather conditions remain supportive, traders anticipate steady inflow of Ratnagiri Alphonso mangoes into markets between February 15 and 20. Until then, early arrivals like these continue to generate buzz, reminding mango lovers that the much-awaited season is just around the corner.
