Mumbai, June 22, 2026: The Monsoon Session of the Maharashtra Legislature begins today (Monday), with heated debates expected between the ruling alliance and the opposition over issues such as alleged commission practices in government contracts, farm loan waivers, and the looming threat of drought in the state.

One of the key issues likely to dominate the session is the state government’s recently announced ‘Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Shetkari Karjmukti Yojana’, under which farmers are eligible for loan waivers of up to ₹2 lakh. The scheme was announced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis during the Budget Session.

However, opposition parties have criticized the eligibility criteria, claiming the conditions are restrictive and demanding a blanket farm loan waiver for all eligible farmers.

Drought Concerns Likely to Take Centre Stage

With deficient rainfall reported in several parts of Maharashtra, concerns over water scarcity and a possible drought situation are expected to be strongly raised by the opposition. The government may face demands for immediate relief measures and a comprehensive drought management plan.

Pimpri-Chinchwad Hooch Tragedy to Be Raised

The opposition is also expected to target the government over last month’s hooch tragedy in the Pimpri-Chinchwad region, where 22 people reportedly died after consuming illicit liquor.

The incident brought renewed attention to the illegal country liquor trade in the state, and opposition leaders are likely to question both the Home Department and the State Excise Department over enforcement failures.

Coaching Class Regulation Law May Be Introduced

Another significant agenda item could be the introduction of a long-pending law to regulate private coaching classes. The proposal for a separate legislation has been under discussion for nearly two decades and may finally be tabled during the current session.

Legislative Council Deputy Chairperson Election Expected

The post of Deputy Chairperson of the Maharashtra Legislative Council is currently vacant following the completion of the term of former Deputy Chairperson Neelam Gorhe last month.

The process for electing a new Deputy Chairperson is expected to begin after the official notification of the Local Authorities Constituency election results. Political observers believe that Dr. Gorhe, who has been re-elected to the Legislative Council, could once again be considered for the position.

Opposition Boycotts Government Tea Meeting

Ahead of the session, opposition parties boycotted the government’s traditional tea meeting on Sunday and used the occasion to launch an attack on the ruling alliance over alleged irregularities in contracts and the implementation of the farm loan waiver scheme.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also commented on the much-discussed “Operation Tiger,” stating:

“We do not carry out half-finished operations; we complete them. You have experienced this before. Wait a little longer, and you will get breaking news soon.”

The statement has triggered political speculation, adding further intrigue to what is expected to be a high-voltage Monsoon Session of the Maharashtra Legislature.
