Pune Police Open Fire in Self-Defense During Operation To Arrest Repeat Offender In Wanowrie; One Injured, Another Absconding
Pune, June 22, 2026: A police officer opened fire in self-defense during an operation to apprehend two history-sheeters in Pune’s Ramtekdi area on Sunday morning, leaving one accused injured while the other managed to escape.
According to Wanawadi Police, the incident occurred at around 6:00 am on a road near House No. 57, Lane No. 5, Survey No. 109, Anandnagar, Ramtekdi. A team from Baner Police Station had gone to seize a vehicle and arrest the accused in connection with Baner Police Station Crime Register No. 191/2026.
Police said that during the operation, the accused allegedly resisted arrest and obstructed public servants from carrying out their duties. One of the accused, identified as **Karanisingh Rajputsingh Dudhani (29)**, allegedly threatened and attacked Assistant Police Inspector (API) **Ganesh Pandit Raikar (38)** with a sharp knife, causing injuries.
Faced with the attack, API Raikar reportedly fired a single round from his service pistol in self-defense. The bullet struck Dudhani in his left leg, following which he was overpowered and later admitted to Sassoon General Hospital for treatment.
Meanwhile, the second accused, **Bintusingh Shamsingh Kalyani (30)**, allegedly attempted to run over Police Havaldar Aher with a vehicle before fleeing from the spot. Police have launched a search operation to trace and arrest him.
Investigators recovered a sharp knife and a blade from the scene.
Police said both accused have an extensive criminal background, with approximately 32 cases registered against them, including offences related to robbery, housebreaking, and bodily crimes.
A case has been registered at Wanawadi Police Station under Crime Register No. 292/2026 under Sections 109, 132, 351(1)(3), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), along with Sections 37(1)(3) read with 135 of the Maharashtra Police Act.
Senior police officers, including Joint Commissioner of Police Sanjay Darade, Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Tejaswi Satpute, and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) Gauhar Hasan, visited the scene following the incident.
