Maharashtra Faces Dual Weather Threat as Monsoon Gains Momentum; Alerts Issued Across State
Maharashtra, June 21: Maharashtra is witnessing sharp weather contrasts, with thunderstorms and rain forecast across several districts while parts of Vidarbha continue to reel under intense heatwave conditions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather alerts for multiple districts as the southwest monsoon is expected to become active across the state in the coming days.
According to the latest forecast, rainfall activity is likely to intensify from June 23 onward, bringing much-awaited relief to several regions that have been waiting for the monsoon’s full arrival.
Yellow Alert for Rain in Konkan Region
Weather conditions have started changing across the Konkan belt, with Mumbai and surrounding areas receiving scattered showers over the weekend.
The IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for the next three days in:
- Mumbai
- Palghar
- Thane
- Raigad
- Ratnagiri
- Sindhudurg
These districts are likely to experience light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
Pune, Kolhapur and Other Western Maharashtra Districts on Alert
Pre-monsoon showers have already begun in Pune and the adjoining ghat sections. The weather department has forecast thunderstorms, lightning and rain accompanied by wind speeds of 30–40 kmph across Western Maharashtra.
A Yellow Alert has been issued for:
- Pune
- Kolhapur
- Sangli
- Satara
- Solapur
Rainfall activity is expected to increase further as monsoon conditions strengthen across the region.
Marathwada Likely to Receive Thunderstorms and Rain
Several districts in Marathwada are expected to witness light to moderate rainfall along with gusty winds.
Districts under Yellow Alert include:
- Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar
- Beed
- Latur
- Dharashiv
Meanwhile, light rainfall is likely in:
- Jalna
- Parbhani
- Hingoli
- Nanded
Rain Forecast for North Maharashtra
The IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall in parts of North Maharashtra, including:
- Dhule
- Nandurbar
- Jalgaon
- Nashik
- Ahilyanagar
Although humidity levels remain high, weather experts expect monsoon activity to become more prominent across the region by June 25.
Orange Alert for Heatwave in Vidarbha
While rainfall activity is increasing elsewhere, several districts in Vidarbha continue to face scorching temperatures.
An Orange Alert for heatwave conditions has been issued for:
- Akola
- Amravati
- Chandrapur
- Gondia
- Nagpur
- Yavatmal
A Yellow Alert has been issued for:
- Wardha
- Gadchiroli
- Bhandara
Some parts of Vidarbha may also witness isolated thunderstorms and strong winds of up to 40–50 kmph.
Monsoon Revival Brings Hope for Farmers
Meteorologists say the southwest monsoon is gradually regaining strength after a sluggish phase earlier this month. The expected increase in rainfall activity during the final week of June is likely to provide relief to farmers and improve sowing conditions across several agricultural regions of Maharashtra.
With contrasting weather conditions continuing across the state, residents have been advised to follow official weather advisories and take necessary precautions against both thunderstorms and extreme heat.
