Speed often defines modern rail travel in India today. With sleek trains like Vande Bharat, Tejas, Amrit Bharat Express, and the upcoming Vande Bharat Sleeper, Indian Railways is showcasing comfort, technology, and efficiency on a global stage. Yet, far away from this race against time, there exists a railway journey where slowness is not a drawback but the very soul of the experience.

Tucked away in the Nilgiri hills of Tamil Nadu runs India’s slowest train — the Nilgiri Mountain Railway (NMR). Covering a distance of only 45 to 46 kilometres, this heritage train takes nearly five hours to complete its journey. The pace may seem surprising in today’s era of high-speed travel, but every minute is packed with history, engineering brilliance, and breathtaking scenery. Along the route, the train passes through 16 tunnels, crosses around 250 bridges, and navigates 208 sharp curves carved into the mountains.

Indian Railways, meanwhile, continues to set new benchmarks in modernization. The introduction of Vande Bharat Sleeper and Amrit Bharat Express trains has significantly enhanced long-distance travel by combining speed, comfort, and modern facilities. As per Press Information Bureau (PIB) data, a total of 164 Vande Bharat trains are operational across India as of 26 December 2025. Remarkably, 15 new Vande Bharat Express services were launched in 2025 alone.

Alongside these, Namo Bharat Rapid Rail services are pushing forward the vision of a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India). At present, these rapid rail services are running on two corridors — Bhuj–Ahmedabad and Jaynagar–Patna — offering faster regional connectivity.

Despite all these advancements, the charm of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway remains unmatched. Southern Railway recently highlighted this unique train through a post on its official Facebook page, drawing attention to India’s slowest yet most enchanting rail journey. Popularly known as the “toy train,” the NMR runs between Mettupalayam and Ooty, winding its way through the Nilgiri mountain range.

In its post, the Railways described the experience as truly unforgettable. The UNESCO-listed railway takes passengers through lush green hills, majestic tunnels, deep valleys, steep gradients, and scenic bridges, creating a visual treat that feels almost unreal.

According to reports, the train departs from Mettupalayam at 7:00 am and reaches Ooty around 12:00 noon. For the return journey, it leaves Ooty at 2:00 pm and arrives back at Mettupalayam by 5:30 pm. En route, travelers get to witness some of the most picturesque locations in the Nilgiris, including Coonoor, Wellington, Aravankadu, and Ketti.

The Nilgiri Mountain Railway proudly holds a place on the UNESCO World Heritage list, recognized for its historic rack-and-pinion technology and exceptional mountain engineering. The journey offers stunning views of the Western Ghats, mist-covered hills, and landscapes that change with every turn.

While high-speed trains like Vande Bharat reflect India’s rapid progress and future ambitions, the Nilgiri Mountain Railway stands as a living reminder of the country’s rich railway legacy. Traveling on India’s slowest train is not about reaching the destination quickly — it is about soaking in a timeless experience that stays with you long after the journey ends.
