Pune, February 6, 2026: A strong contingent of veteran athletes from Pune is all set to represent India at the Abu Dhabi Open Masters Games 2026, scheduled to be held from February 6 to February 14. The prestigious international event will bring together experienced sportspersons from across the globe, celebrating competitive excellence and active ageing.
The Pune contingent will depart for Abu Dhabi on February 5, a day ahead of the opening ceremony, which will take place on the evening of February 6 at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), one of the region’s largest indoor sporting arenas.
Leading the Pune team is Raj Singh, a seasoned athlete known for his versatility across multiple disciplines. Singh will compete in both badminton and athletics, demonstrating remarkable endurance and commitment. In the 60-plus age category, he will take part in the 100-metre sprint, long jump, and shot put events.
In badminton, Pune will be represented strongly across age categories. In the men’s 60-plus category, Raj Singh will be joined by Dhananjay Deshpande, while Yuvraj Sandbhor and Suchit Sancheti will compete in the 40-plus men’s category. In mixed doubles (60-plus), Raj Singh will partner Rekha Dhupar from Chandigarh, while Dhananjay Deshpande will team up with Judy Fernandes from Goa.
The Pune squad also includes athletes competing in other disciplines. Yuvraj Sandbhor will represent the city in swimming, Nitin Vaidya in cycling, and Prashant Birajdar, Kunal, and Kedar Vani in various other sporting events.
The participation of these veteran athletes, many of whom balance professional careers alongside sport, stands as a powerful message promoting fitness, discipline, and active living. Their journey to Abu Dhabi is expected to inspire the sporting community in Pune and beyond.
