This simple homemade mixture using onions and boric powder is being shared as an affordable way to reduce cockroaches at home, especially in kitchens, bathrooms and drainage corners.

Cockroaches are one of the most common household problems, especially during humid weather. They often appear in kitchens, bathrooms, storerooms and near drainage areas. Apart from being unpleasant, cockroaches can increase unsanitary conditions, cause foul smells and raise the risk of allergies, asthma and skin infections by contaminating food.

While chemical sprays and pesticides are widely available, many families avoid them because of their strong odour and potential harm to children and pets. This is why home-based remedies continue to remain popular.

One such method uses onions and boric powder, which are easily available and low-cost.

According to the remedy, onions work as an attractant because their smell and moisture draw cockroaches towards the mixture. Boric powder, on the other hand, is toxic to cockroaches. Once they consume it, their digestive system is affected, leading to death over time. The powder can also stick to their bodies, spreading the effect to other cockroaches in hiding areas.

Ingredients Needed

The remedy requires only a few basic items: two medium-sized onions, two to three teaspoons of boric powder, one teaspoon of wheat flour or maida, a little water if required, and gloves for safe handling.

How To Prepare The Mixture

First, peel and finely chop the onions or grind them into a paste. The finer the paste, the better it mixes. Add boric powder into the onion paste and mix well. If the mixture feels too wet, wheat flour can be added to make it easier to shape.

Small balls are then formed from the mixture.

Where To Place The Balls

These balls are placed in areas where cockroaches are usually active, such as under the kitchen sink, behind the refrigerator, near bathroom drains, inside cupboard corners, or around storage spaces.

The remedy claims that cockroach activity may reduce within two to three days, though complete results may take one to two weeks. Fresh balls should be replaced every three to four days, as onions lose their effect once dried.

Along with such remedies, maintaining cleanliness remains essential. Regular sweeping, timely disposal of garbage, fixing water leaks, sealing cracks, and storing food in closed containers can help prevent cockroach infestations.

Disclaimer: This is a general home-care tip shared for awareness. Boric powder should be handled carefully and kept away from children and pets. For severe infestations, professional pest control advice is recommended.
