Tragedy unfolded at Lonavala’s well-known Lions Point after a 32-year-old IT professional from Pune allegedly ended his life by leaping into a deep gorge at the tourist spot. The incident has shocked the local community and once again brought attention to safety concerns at the popular viewpoint.

The deceased has been identified as Virendra Sinha, an IT engineer employed with a private company based in Pune’s Baner area. The matter came to light early Thursday morning when police discovered a car left unattended near Lions Point along the Mumbai-Pune Highway. After verifying the vehicle’s registration details, officers confirmed that it belonged to Sinha.

When initial checks in the vicinity failed to trace him, authorities began to suspect that he might have either slipped or jumped into the nearby ravine, which is estimated to be around 250 feet deep. Given the steep and challenging terrain, specialized rescue assistance was immediately sought.

During the preliminary inquiry, investigators found that Sinha had sent emails and messages to his wife and a few close friends shortly before the incident. According to police sources, the content of those messages suggested he was under intense mental stress and was contemplating taking an extreme step. The communications were reportedly noticed only after the unfortunate event, leaving family members devastated.

A joint rescue mission was carried out by the Lonavala Rural Police along with the Shivdurg Rescue Team and volunteers from the Maval Wildlife Protection Organization. Despite the risky conditions and difficult descent into the gorge, teams managed to recover the body from a depth of approximately 250 feet after several hours of effort.

Police have registered the case and stated that further investigation is in progress. Officials are closely examining Sinha’s digital correspondence and personal background to better understand the circumstances that may have led to the incident.
