Pune’s Infrastructure Set For Major Transformation In 3–4 Years, Says Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar
Pune, February 14, 2026: Emphasizing the government’s focus on strengthening urban infrastructure, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said the city is poised for a visible transformation over the next three to four years. Despite ongoing transportation challenges, he expressed confidence that upcoming infrastructure projects will significantly improve mobility and reshape the city’s landscape.
Speaking at an awards ceremony organized by the Pune Centre of the The Indian Institute of Architects (IIA) at Bougainvillea Farms, Vakil Nagar, D.P. Road, Kumar noted that the government has initiated several projects, including new flyovers and metro expansions, aimed at strengthening Pune’s infrastructure and streamlining its transport system.
Senior Architects Honoured
At the event, senior architects Anurag Kashyap, V. V. Badawe, Narendra Dengle and Ramchandra Gohad were conferred with the IIA S. K. Belvalkar Award for Excellence in Profession for their outstanding contributions to architecture.
Additionally, Dr. Asmita Pethe, Vinish Desai and Asmita Joshi were honoured with the IIA S. J. Contracts Award for Excellence in Teaching for their work in architectural education.
Chairman of IIA Pune Centre Vikas Achalkar, Vice Chairman Shitesh Agarwal, Sameer Belvalkar and Saurabh Jangle were present at the ceremony. Following the awards presentation, Vikas Achalkar, Shitesh Agarwal and Sandeep Mahajan interacted with the Police Commissioner.
Focus on Police Infrastructure and Urban Planning
Highlighting internal infrastructure needs, Kumar pointed out that some police station buildings under the Commissionerate operate from rented premises, while others are old and undergoing renewal. He informed that construction of a new building for the Police Commissionerate is currently underway and is expected to be completed within the next two years.
He also stressed the need to utilize open spaces beneath city flyovers effectively, suggesting that beautification of these areas would enhance Pune’s overall appearance.
Kumar described architects as creative professionals and urged them to exercise due diligence while executing projects. He assured that the police administration would ensure that architects in the city are not subjected to unnecessary harassment.
Need for Parking and Emergency Access
With rapid urban development underway, the Police Commissioner underlined the importance of adequate parking facilities in new projects. He further emphasized the necessity of ensuring sufficient access space for ambulances and fire engines.
Speaking at the event, architect V. V. Badawe said architecture is a promising and creative profession with immense opportunities for the youth. Ramchandra Gohad added that, given the current rate of population growth, there is a pressing need to plan and develop new cities. He encouraged young professionals to explore opportunities with organizations such as City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) and Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).
