Pune: PMC Begins Citywide Footpath Revamp With Pilot Project In Model Colony
Pune, February 17, 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) on Monday rolled out a pilot initiative aimed at repairing and standardising footpaths across the city, starting with a 1.4-km stretch in Model Colony.
The project was inaugurated by Pune Mayor Manjushree Nagpure and Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram along Lakaki Road, between Thorat Chowk and Vetalbaba Chowk.
Addressing the gathering, Nagpure said the civic body has launched a focused drive to make footpaths safer and more pedestrian-friendly. As part of the effort, obstructions such as electric poles, distribution boxes and other impediments will be removed. Encroachments will also be cleared, and uneven surfaces will be levelled to ensure uniformity.
“The aim is to create accessible and continuous walkways for citizens. The Model Colony stretch will serve as a benchmark for similar upgrades in other parts of Pune,” she said.
In addition to the repair work, the mayor announced a monitoring programme named ‘Jaglaya’ to ensure sustained upkeep of footpaths. Under the initiative, each ward office will designate a staff member to conduct regular on-ground inspections of footpaths in their respective areas. The appointed employee will document issues such as encroachments, utility obstructions and damaged surfaces.
Officials said the designated staff member will submit daily reports to senior authorities, enabling prompt corrective measures. The collected data will also be reviewed at higher administrative levels to maintain quality and accountability.
MLA Siddharth Shirole and Leader of the House Ganesh Bidkar were present at the inauguration.
Commissioner Ram directed civic officials to develop the pilot stretch as a model corridor, adding that the same standards would be implemented across the city in a phased manner.
