CBSE Clarifies Class 10 Two-Board Exam Rules for 2026: First Exam Mandatory, Compartment and Improvement Students Eligible for Second Attempt
Major changes are on the way for Class 10 students as the Central Board of Secondary Education introduces its two-board examination system from the 2026 academic session. With the new format allowing students to take the board exams twice in the same year, several questions had surfaced among parents and candidates about eligibility, especially for those who may miss the first exam. Addressing these concerns, CBSE has now issued a detailed clarification outlining who can appear in the second examination and under what conditions.
According to an official statement cited by PTI, CBSE has made it clear that appearing in the first board examination is compulsory for all Class 10 students. The first examination is scheduled between February 17 and March 2026, while the second examination will be conducted from May 15 to June 1, 2026.
CBSE Examination Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj, as quoted by PTI, stated that all students are required to sit for the first board examination. He further explained that students who pass and meet eligibility conditions will be given an opportunity to improve their performance in up to three subjects, including Science, Mathematics, Social Science and languages.

Students who receive a Compartment result in the first examination will be permitted to appear in the second examination under the Compartment category. This means that those marked as Compartment in the February March exam cycle can reappear in May June to clear the subject.
The board has also explained the Essential Repeat rule. If a student does not appear in at least three subjects during the first examination, they will not be allowed to sit for the second examination. Such candidates will be placed in the Essential Repeat category and will only be eligible to appear again in the main board examinations the following year in February. CBSE has clearly stated that no exemption requests from this rule will be entertained.
Under the new system, eligibility for the second examination includes several categories. Students who have passed the first exam can opt for improvement in up to three main subjects. Those falling under the First Chance Compartment or Third Chance Compartment categories can also apply. In certain cases, students may qualify under both Compartment and Improvement provisions simultaneously.
Additionally, students who passed the first examination after replacing a subject are also eligible to appear in the second examination for improvement purposes.
CBSE has also clarified that students cannot choose to skip the first exam and directly appear for the second exam due to personal, medical or other reasons. Participation in the first board examination remains mandatory for everyone.
Another important point highlighted by the board is that once a student passes Class 10, they will not be allowed to take additional subjects separately at a later stage. CBSE will begin conducting board examinations for Classes 10 and 12 from Tuesday, with more than 46 lakh students from India and abroad expected to appear.
With this clarification, CBSE has attempted to remove confusion surrounding the two-board exam format. The system is designed to provide flexibility and improvement opportunities while maintaining academic discipline. Students and parents are advised to carefully understand the eligibility criteria, as missing multiple subjects in the first examination could delay academic progress by an entire year.
