Oil shipments suspended, over 200 reported dead, global leaders call for restraint as West Asia conflict deepens

The conflict in West Asia escalated sharply after the United States launched military strikes on Iran, triggering a chain of dramatic developments including the reported death of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and the shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz.

US President Donald Trump announced in a video statement that America had begun a “massive and ongoing operation” aimed at eliminating what he described as “imminent threats” from Iran. He said the objective was to defend American people and military bases from the Iranian regime.

“Our objective is to defend the American people by eliminating imminent threats from the Iranian regime,” Trump said, adding that Iran’s activities directly endangered US troops and allies.

However, reports citing US intelligence sources said Trump’s claim that Iran was building missiles capable of hitting the American mainland is not backed by intelligence assessments. Sources indicated there is no evidence that Iran is currently pursuing an intercontinental ballistic missile programme targeting the United States, though Iran does possess short-range ballistic missiles capable of threatening US bases in the region.

Khamenei Reported Dead, Transition Announced

Iranian state media confirmed that Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had been killed during the joint US-Israeli attacks. Following his death, Iran’s Supreme National Security Council announced that the president, the head of the judiciary, and a jurist from the Guardian Council would oversee the transition period.

Under Iran’s constitution, the Assembly of Leadership Experts — an 88-member clerical body — must appoint a new Supreme Leader as soon as possible. However, assembling the body amid ongoing attacks could prove challenging.

Iran has declared 40 days of public mourning and a seven-day public holiday following Khamenei’s death.

At least 133 civilians have been reported killed and more than 200 injured in the strikes, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency. The Iranian Red Crescent has put the overall death toll at over 200. Attacks have been reported across 18 provinces, with Tehran facing the heaviest bombardment.

Explosions continued to be heard in the Iranian capital as the sun rose on Sunday.

Strait Of Hormuz Closed, Oil Shipments Halted

In a move with global economic implications, Iran announced it had shut navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. Several tanker owners, oil majors and trading houses have suspended shipments of crude oil, fuel and liquefied natural gas through the strategic waterway.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most critical energy chokepoints, handling a significant share of global oil and gas exports. Any prolonged disruption could impact global energy prices and supply chains.

Regional And Global Reactions

The Israeli Defence Forces said they had launched additional waves of strikes targeting Iranian missile supplies and defence systems. In response, Iran reportedly launched attacks on US-linked targets in the Middle East, including locations in Dubai, Doha, Bahrain and Kuwait.

The United Kingdom confirmed it is participating in “co-ordinated regional defensive operations” to protect British nationals and partners. China expressed deep concern over the strikes and called for an immediate cessation of military action to prevent further escalation.

Trump also addressed the Iranian public directly, saying, “The hour of your freedom is at hand,” and described the moment as “the single greatest chance for the Iranian people to take back their country.” While not explicitly calling for regime change, he indicated the US expects significant political transformation within Iran.

The conflict follows weeks of tension over Iran’s nuclear programme, with mediated talks reportedly nearing a breakthrough before the strikes were launched.

As airstrikes continue and global markets react to disruptions in oil supply, diplomatic pressure is mounting to prevent the situation from spiralling into a wider regional war.
